  • The Institution of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg is a multi-campus South African public research university located in the northern areas of downtown Johannesburg. Wits University is another name for Wits College.
  • The Institution of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg is a public research university with many campuses in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is situated in the city’s northern outskirts. Wits University, or just Wits, is the most often used name. The institution, like Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand in general, has mining roots. It was founded in 1896 as the South African School of Mines in Kimberley, making it the third-oldest South African school still in existence.
  • The university had 40,259 students enrolled as of 2018, with around 20% of those living on campus in the institution’s 17 residences. Undergraduate studies account for 63% of total enrolment at the institution, with postgraduate studies accounting for 35% and Occasional Students accounting for the remaining 2%.
  • According to the 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities, Wits University is the highest-ranked university in Africa (ARWU). Wits were awarded the finest institution in South Africa by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) in 2016. According to the CWUR rankings, Wits has held this position since 2014.

Students should be aware of the norms and regulations listed below. Before proceeding to the application processes indicated below, prospective students are highly advised to read the full paper.

  • To apply online, go to www.wits.ac.za/applications/.
  • A total of three programs can be applied for (order of choice does not matter).
  • It is advised that if you apply to two programs in the same Faculty, you apply to one program in a less limited faculty (e.g. Humanities, Commerce, or Science).
  • Maintain your options, especially if you’re applying to degrees in colleges such as Health Sciences or Engineering.
  • The program’s duration should not be entered. You want to start your studies in the first year.
  • A non-refundable application fee of R100 is needed for South African nationals.
  • In addition, international citizens must pay R700.
