About UCT

  • The Institution of Cape Town (UCT) is a public research university in Cape Town, South Africa’s Western Cape region. UCT was founded in 1829 as the South African College, making it South Africa’s oldest higher education school. It is the oldest university in South Africa and the oldest existent university in Sub-Saharan Africa, having obtained full university status on the same day in 1918 as Stellenbosch University.
  • Although UCT was established by a private act of Parliament in 1918, the University of Cape Town Statute (issued in 2002 in terms of the Higher Education Act) establishes its structure and roles, designating the Chancellor – currently, Dr. Precious Moloi Motsepe – as the ceremonial figurehead and vesting real leadership authority in the Vice-Chancellor, currently Prof Mamokgethi Phakeng, who reports to the University Council.
  • The university has roughly 29,000 to 30,000 students enrolled in liberal arts, pure sciences, and professional degrees ranging from bachelor’s degrees to doctoral degree levels, and is organized into six faculties and a multidisciplinary Centre for Higher Education Development.
  •  A thriving student community of over 100 organizations and clubs caters to a wide range of interests including religion, politics, culture, community outreach, and sport, with notable participation in national leagues such as, but not limited to, the Varsity Cup. The moniker “Ikeys” arose from the historic (and ongoing) intellectual, sports, and political rivalry between UCT and Stellenbosch University.
