About University of KwaZulu-Natal

  • In 2004, the University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville merged to become the university.
  • Professor Malegapuru Makgoba, a world-renowned medical scientist and former President of the Medical Research Council, was chosen Vice-Chancellor and University Principal by the University of Natal Council on May 31, 2002, and began his tenure on September 1, 2002. He was charged with bringing together the Universities of Natal and Durban-Westville. As a result, he became the final Vice-Chancellor of the University of Natal. Professor Makgoba succeeded Professor Brenda Gourley as Vice-Chancellor.
  • He was formally appointed as the founding Vice-Chancellor of the newly combined University of KwaZulu-Natal after serving as interim Vice-Chancellor in 2004. On September 30, 2005, he was formally installed.
  • Professor Makgoba resigned in 2015 after serving two five-year terms. His presidency, on the other hand, was dogged by scandal. Makgoba is accused of creating a “culture of animosity” at the institution, which led to the departure of world-renowned researchers. As his replacement, Dr Albert van Jaarsveld took over.
