About University of KwaZulu-Natal

  • The University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville amalgamated in 2004 to become this institution.
  • On May 31, 2002, the University of Natal Council selected Professor Malegapuru Makgoba, a world-renowned medical scientist and former President of the Medical Research Council, as Vice-Chancellor and University Principal, and he assumed office on September 1, 2002. He was given the duty of merging the University of Natal with the University of Durban-Westville. As a result, he became the final Vice-Chancellor of the University of Natal. Professor Makgoba succeeded Professor Brenda Gourley as Vice-Chancellor.
  • After serving as temporary Vice-Chancellor in 2004, he was formally appointed as the inaugural Vice-Chancellor of the newly united University of KwaZulu-Natal. He was formally installed on September 30, 2005.
  • Professor Makgoba resigned in 2015 after serving two five-year terms. His presidency, on the other hand, was dogged by scandal. Makgoba is accused of creating a “culture of animosity” at the institution, which led to the departure of world-renowned researchers. As his replacement, Dr Albert van Jaarsveld took over.
