About University of KwaZulu-Natal

  • The University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville combined to become the university in 2004.
  • Professor Malegapuru Makgoba, a world-renowned medical scientist and former President of the Medical Research Council, was appointed Vice-Chancellor and University Principal by the University of Natal Council on May 31, 2002, and began his term on September 1, 2002. He was charged with bringing together the Universities of Natal and Durban-Westville. As a result, he became the final Vice-Chancellor of the University of Natal. Professor Makgoba succeeded Professor Brenda Gourley as Vice-Chancellor.
  • After serving as temporary Vice-Chancellor in 2004, he was formally appointed as the inaugural Vice-Chancellor of the newly united University of KwaZulu-Natal. He was formally installed on September 30, 2005.
  • Professor Makgoba retired in 2015 after two five-year periods in office. His presidency, on the other hand, was marred by controversy. Makgoba is accused of establishing a “culture of antagonism” within the university, leading to the exit of world-renowned scholars. Dr Albert van Jaarsveld took over as his successor.

Undergraduate Programmes
  • Open Learning is a learning approach that combines study resources with instructor-led sessions. This means that the student receives course materials and works at his or her own speed and place. Tutor-supported class group sessions are offered on Saturdays at regional gathering spots, where students can get tutoring and mingle with other course participants. The student can choose a study program that matches his or her unique needs within a tutor-supported framework.
Regional Study Centres
  • Throughout the semester, these class study sessions are offered at regional sites on multiple Saturdays. This implies that students from remote study centers work in areas such as Durban, Empangeni, Ladysmith, Newcastle, Port Shepstone, and Pietermaritzburg, among others. Please bear in mind that these programs are only available to active teachers and registered nurses.
