About University of Limpopo

  • The University of Limpopo is a South African university located in the Limpopo Province. The University of the North and the Medical University of South Africa merged on January 1, 2005, to establish the University of the North and the Medical University of South Africa (MEDUNSA).  Turfloop and MEDUNSA are the university’s Turfloop and MEDUNSA campuses, respectively. The MEDUNSA campus was split in 2015, and the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University was formed.
  • The University of Limpopo was formed on January 1, 2005, when the previous Medical University of Southern Africa and the University of the North merged.
  • In 1959, the University Education Act was amended to allow for the establishment of racially restricted universities for black South Africans. Under the terms of the Act, the University College of the North was established on August 1, 1959, around thirty kilometers from the Limpopo Province town of Polokwane. The academic trustee of the College has been appointed by the University of South Africa. This crucial connection was maintained until the South African Parliament approved the University of the North Act (Act No. 47 of 1969), essentially abolishing the College status in 1969.
